For Black: - The Gruenfeld Defence

We’ve already featured a couple of games on this course where The Gruenfeld (sometimes

‘Grunfeld’) was played by Black. One was an amazing game played by a 13 year old future

World Champion and one was played seven years later by the same young man, winning a

brilliancy prize in the process.

In both games, the player of the white pieces was International Grandmaster Robert Byrne

and his opponent (playing The Gruenfeld) was Bobby Fischer.

The featured master game in this module of the course will be another of Fischer’s; this time playing The Gruenfeld against Boris Spassky who was the reigning World Champion at the time.

It’s Black’s third move which initiates the Gruenfeld. Here’s the position from Black’s

viewpoint.
