For White: - The Colle System – Koltanowski Variation

We’ll never know the full potential of Edgard Colle for, like Morphy and Pillsbury, he died before his prime.

Born in 1897 he was a contemporary of the best known of Belgium’s chess players, George Koltanowski. They met in many chess battles in Colle’s short life.

Harry Golombek said that Colle, ‘possessed enormous combinational ability and produced a flow of beautiful brilliancies’. All his games were hard-fought. Lengthy, difficult and tiring games were part of his style. Only his stupendous willpower carried him through these games. His spirit ruled his body.

Despite his constant ill health, Colle scored a number of fine tournament results in the 1920s, finishing ahead of players like Tartakower, Euwe, Spielmann and Grunfeld. He was equal First with Frank Marshall and Takacs at Hastings in 1928/9 and First at Scarborough in 1930 ahead of Maroczy, Rubinstein, Ahues, Sultan Khan and Grunfeld. He tied for third place with Nimzowitsch at Liege in 1930.

His last tournament was at Rotterdam in 1931 where he finished second.
