CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Idina glanced at the insignia on his uniform and took another staggering step forward. “Sergeant?”

The soldier’s eyelids fluttered, and with nothing but the door holding him up, he slowly sank to the floor. His boots skidded out in front of him, and he sat there limply, his head bobbing toward his chest and back up again.

Idina still wasn’t completely convinced. Everything since she’d reached her first rendezvous point on the land-nav site had been part of an elaborate and admittedly effective training exercise. Even being locked up here in this room. Now she could probably add being locked up in here with a sergeant who’d “escaped” some kind of engagement right outside.

Still, the way he slumped against the door and swayed like he was about to pass out at any second made it impossible to tell.

He could be an incredible actor. Not impossible…

She took another step forward anyway, searching the guy visually and trying to listen for any other sounds of exchanged fire or more people outside. “Sergeant? Are you—”

“Briggs,” he murmured. With his next long, drawn-out inhale, he finally gathered enough strength to lift his head and look at her again. “Your turn.”

“Moorfield.”

A small smile flickered on his mouth as he looked her up and down. “No clue what happened to you, Private, but you look like shit.”

Idina huffed a weak-sounding laugh and nodded. “Yeah. That makes two of us.”

Briggs grimaced as he tried to shift his weight on the floor, but he didn’t look capable of moving more than an inch in any direction. “Yep. Only I know what happened to me.”

His chin bobbed back down toward his chest. Then Idina realized he was looking down at his lap and didn’t have the strength to keep holding up his head. She followed his gaze as the sergeant removed his forearms from where he’d been hugging them against his abdomen. Until now, Idina had assumed that was the position in which he’d fallen.

Instead, he’d been clamping his arms down as best he could against a massive, bloody stain in his uniform, the center of which was right below his bottom right rib.

Briggs drew in a hissing breath as he peered at his wound. “Pretty sure I got hit.”

“How the fuck did that happen?” Idina blurted.

The sergeant looked up at her again and probably meant to scoff. It sounded more like an old cat failing to hack up a hairball. “Generally with bullets.”

She stared at him for another second, then the reality of what she was dealing with hit her hard. “Holy shit, this is all real.”

“You know, I had the—” Briggs dropped his head against the door, gritting his teeth. “The same thought about two minutes ago. Sounds like you got a few screws shaken loose yourself, Private. Are you on something?”

He kept talking, but Idina was already racing across the small room toward her ruck beside the thin, lumpy pallet on the floor. She dropped to her knees, ripped open her pack, and pulled out her basic individual first aid kit.
