CHAPTER TEN

Hours later, Will woke, disoriented. He was startled to look down and see bear hands. He pushed to his feet and double-checked. Yes, those were paws. As he stared, the events of the morning came racing back. A boy had been going to burn down the barn. Will had imagined it in flames, the horses trapped there, the men risking their lives to save the animals. Ryan would have raced in. He wouldn’t have cared about his own safety, and he would have blamed himself.

What if Ryan hadn’t gotten through to him before he’d hurt that boy? He was a danger to everyone. He should just stay in bear form from now on. He had no business around people if he couldn’t do any better than that. Thank God Zach hadn’t hired him yet. That would have been a huge mistake.

He lay back down and put his head on his paws. He’d fallen for Ryan even though he knew a happy ending with him was too good to be true. Now Ryan would never want to talk to him again.

A stick snapped. Someone was coming. Will had been so unaware of his surroundings, mired in his own hell that he hadn’t even noticed. He breathed deeply and smelled Tristan. How the fuck had Tristan found him out there?

He growled, knowing it wouldn’t deter Tristan but wanting him to know Will wasn’t in the mood to be consoled.

Tristan appeared in the entrance to the cave a few seconds later, holding clothes in his hands. Obviously, he thought Will was coming back with him. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” he asked.

Will made a sound between a growl and a snuffle, then did the closest thing to a shrug that he could manage in bear form.

“Ryan needs you. You ran away and left him there. How could you do that?”

Tristan was angrier than Will had ever seen him.

He was going to have to shift and face this, but how could Tristan think Ryan wanted anything to do with him after this?

“You didn’t even stay to help us. That asshole kid was going to burn the barn down, but did you wait around until we took care of that problem? Hell no. Did you help us decide whether it was time to involve the police? Oh, no. You just ran off exactly like you begged Ryan not to ever do. Do you even care what the kid told us or what Wes had found out?”

Will made a mournful sound and covered his face with his paws.

Tristan threw Wes’s clothes at him. “You’re going to shift right fucking now, and then we’re going to get some things straight, because if you ever act like this much of an ass again, I’m not coming after you.”

Will rose up on his hind legs and snarled at Tristan, but Tristan didn’t even flinch. He’d seen Will nearly take a swipe at that kid, but he didn’t seem to care.

“Don’t even think you’re going to scare me.
