Chapter 4

“Dinner was delicious, Mrs Richards.” Ethan dabbed at the corners of his mouth then placed the napkin on his knees. “Thank you.”

“It was my pleasure. You are welcome anytime.”

“Yes, that’s right, but you must extend an invitation to your parents on our behalf,” Dad chimed in.

“I’d like that,” Ethan replied.

We’d only been dating weeks. Was there any need for a big family gathering? It wasn’t as though we were about to have a shotgun wedding.

“Shall we go through to the conservatory?” Mum was determined Ethan would see every room in the house.

“You have a beautiful home, Mr Richards.”

“Thank you, we like it very much.”

“How have you settled into village life?”

“Quite well,” he “Although there are a few more weirdos here than I’m used to dealing with in the city.”

“Inbred,” Aimee suddenly piped up, making me jump.

“I beg your pardon?” Dad turned to look at Aimee.

“Not you, Mr Richards. The villagers.”

“Ah… now that isn’t really fair, is it?”

“I’m not being mean, but facts are facts.”

“How so?”

Oh, why did he have to ask her that question. I had no idea what was about to come out of her mouth, but I knew it was bound to be a shocker.

“You see, years ago, the sheep population outnumbered the human population by a considerable margin, so it came down to a choice–sheep shaggin’ or marry your cousin, and most of them chose the latter. That’s why a lot of them are a bit, well you know, slow.”

She had really outdone herself this time.

My mum’s mouth dropped open and my dad narrowed his eyes. His jaw was set, and I knew he was less than amused. It was his expression that stopped me from laughing.

Ethan burst out laughing, then controlled himself, choking while trying to speak. I gave him a swift bang on the back. “I’m so sorry for laughing.”

“Don’t worry, we’re used to Aimee’s rather colourful descriptions of life by now, although intercourse with sheep wasn’t something I ever expected to learn about in my own home, especially in front of invited guests.”

“It’s true,” Aimee protested. “You ask me mam. Both her and me dad are second cousins, but it did me no harm thankfully.”

My dad looked fit to burst. “I hope you’re not planning on marrying a close relative anytime soon?”

“Oh, God, no, have you seen most of them?” She shuddered, her boobs jiggling like unset jelly. “I have two cousins, and both remind me of serial killers.”

“Aimee…” I wanted to divert the conversation, but she ignored me.

“In fact, one of ‘em has yet to discover there should be two eyebrows; you know who I mean, Tess? He’s the one who sleeps in the barn with his cow, Daisy, while the other one reminds me of Gollum from Lord of the Rings.”

“Lord help us.” My mum looked bewildered but was obviously desperate to change the subject. “You’re seeing that nice boy from college aren’t you. What’s his name? Phillip something…?”

“Tim Phillips,” Aimee corrected her.

“Oh, yes, now I remember. He looks like a pleasant boy from what I recall, but it’s shame about his eyes.
