Mimulus suksdorfii (Suksdorf’s monkeyflower)

FAMILY: Phrymaceae (Scrophulariaceae)

DISTRIBUTION Common throughout, especially at higher elevations

HABITAT Moist, sunny locations with bare soil but prefers richer soils than other monkeyflowers

ELEVATION 5,500'–13,000'

SEASON Early July–early August

LOCATIONS West slope of Mt. Dana, west side of Long Lake (Rock Creek Basin), Palisade Basin, Rae Lakes Basin, John Muir Trail west of Center Peak, Cottonwood Lakes

LEAVES AND STEMS: This miniature annual is usually 1–6 cm in height. The leaves and stem are a dark reddish-green and covered with very short, glandular hairs that sparkle in the sun. Because the plant is so short, the leaves are densely clustered at ground level. It prefers well-developed soils and is more common at meadow edges than on sandy flats.
