In January at Murrayville
Only the river moves;
Sky quivers with its weight of sun:
Noon heat cracks wattle seeds.
But in the Grampians, at dusk,
Before young rats come out,
You walk with clouds caught in your hair
Past ghosts that cling to rock.
O Desert,
One vision of wildflowers in five years
Is not enough.
In the Big Desert there is a silence that welcomes you
But if you stay
You find the other silence that fits your head inside a vice.
There is an excellence
In going up to Minyip for a month in summer
And gazing at a field of sunflowers one afternoon
While reading the Parmenides:
The stranger we call Being
Makes patterns in wheat fields before dawn,
And iron tanks, set deep in earth,
Say the few, simple things that must be heard.
