"Who knows?" Ivy said. "I'm inclined to put him back on the street, tap his phone, and keep tabs on him. Maybe he can lead you guys to something, and maybe we can use him to get closer to César Vargas."

"Works for me," I said.

"We can always pick him up later if we need to," Ivy added.

We pushed back into the interrogation room.

"Here's the deal," Ivy said. "You work for me now. You go back to doing what you were doing. And you try to work your way up the chain. I want you to get close to César Vargas. I want you to find out if he kidnapped Savannah Powell. And if so, where he's keeping her."

"I can't just go to César and ask him,” Juan said. “Like I said, I worked for Rocco. I never met César."

"Trust me. If you work for Rocco, César knows who you are."

"So, what do I do?"

"You do whatever we tell you to do," Ivy said.

"Something a little more specific would be nice."

"You go back to whatever rock it is that you crawled from under. You tell your close friends you were in a shootout, you got away, and you’re lying low until the heat dies down. César's people will come looking for you. They’ll want to know what happened and want to make sure you didn't take the product for your own."

"Then what?" Juan asked.

"César will either believe you or he won't,” Ivy said. “If he believes you, I suspect you may even get promoted since Rocco is out of the picture."

"And if César doesn't believe me?"

"I think you know the answer to that," Ivy said.

Flush Boy swallowed hard.

Before we cut the scumbag loose, Ivy loaded software onto Juan's phone that allowed her to track the device and activate the microphone at any time. Ivy and her team loaded him into their utility van, and we dropped him off in a back alley not far from the stash house.

Ivy slid open the side door of the van, and Flush Boy slinked out. He gave a paranoid glance around as Ivy pulled the door shut, and the van drove away.

"I'll have my people sit on him," Ivy said to us. "I'll give you a heads-up if anything related to your kidnapping case turns up."

I thanked her for her cooperation, and she dropped us off at Diver Down. We hopped out of the utility van and watched them speed out of the parking lot.

We climbed into JD's Porsche and cruised over to the Seven Seas to check on Dan. He pulled open the door to the bungalow, looking like he'd dipped back into the bottle again. But he wasn’t near as drunk as the night before.

Dan invited us in, and JD caught him up to speed. "You hear anything from the kidnappers?"

Dan shook his head. "We're running out of time. I don't even know if Savannah’s still alive. What if these scumbags you took down today actually kidnapped her? She could be alone somewhere, no food, no water, and nobody coming back to her.
