"Deputy Wild, what can you tell us about the incident?" Paris Delaney asked as I stepped out of the store onto the sidewalk.
The gorgeous blonde had pushed through the crowd with her camera crew in tow. The lens focused on me, and a boom microphone with a fluffy windscreen hovered over my head.
The rain had stopped, and gray clouds still blanketed the sky. Shafts of sunlight poked through tiny gaps.
I gave her a brief recap of the situation and asked viewers to notify the Sheriff's Department if anybody had any leads. Off-camera, I told Paris I would send her the security footage. The perps were dressed in nondescript attireâblack hoodies and masks. But perhaps someone might recognize something about the perpetratorsâclothing, mannerisms, the way they walked.
After the interview, JD and I pushed through the crowd, heading down the sidewalk to the Porsche. For the first time in a few days, he put the top down. It felt liberating. We cruised back to the station to fill out paperwork, the damp air swirling around.
Afterward, we grabbed lunch, then decided to take the surveillance van and stake out Jericho's bungalow to see what kind of trouble he was getting himself into.
We frequently changed the wrap on the van. JD had a connection at a place that did detailing and vinyl wraps. They were the best on the island and could apply any graphic that you could dream up. The van was currently disguised as a plumbing vehicle. Half the fun was making up names of fake companies and designing logos and slogans. I'd create them in Photoshop, send the files to JD's guy, and he'd fit them to a custom template for the make of the van.
Today, we were Dr. Drippy's Pipe & Drain.
The vehicle had every surveillance gadget known to man. There were various cameras hidden around the van, and large flatscreens inside displayed the feeds in ultra-high definition.
We brought one of the young tech guys along with us to operate the gear. The department had hired several tech gurus away from the bigger IT companies. We camped out down the street from the bungalow.
Crenshaw had been with us on a previous op and had gotten a taste for it. Stakeouts could be extremely boring most of the time. But when something of note went down or critical information was learned, they could be exhilarating. Those moments were few and far between.
Not much happened for the first hour.
"We need to get eyes and ears inside," JD said.
"How by the book are we doing things?" Crenshaw asked.
JD and I exchanged a glance, and we both shrugged.
Crenshaw knew we took a flexible approach to the rules in certain situations. We certainly didn't have a warrant.
"What do you have in mind?" I asked.
"Well, I can scan his wireless network for IOT (Internet of Things) devices and other possible access points."
I gave him a nod.
Crenshaw grabbed his backpack and pulled out a laptop. He flipped it open and launched an application that scanned all the wireless networks in the area.
