“Can I ask you a favour?” Milly said to Percy and Brynn.

“What is it? We’ll do the best we can.” Percy scraped the remnants of his porridge from the bowl.

“I’ve got friends and family back in Redcross. I need to send them messages to let them know I’m OK. Would you pass them on for me?”

“We’d be happy to,” Brynn said reassuringly.

“Thanks.”

“Anyone want some more?” a Groves Wolf-Lord asked, putting a pan brimming with porridge down on the table in front of them.

“I will, please,” Milly said. Next morning, it would be biscuits and fruit for breakfast. The porridge was like a comforting blanket. “Thank you.”

“Brynn? Your Lordship?”

Percy and Brynn shook their heads and the Wolf-Lord moved on to the next people.

“Percy, why do they call you ‘your Lordship’?” Milly asked curiously. The words weren’t spoken with automatic respect, the way someone said “Yes, Premier” back in Redcross. They sounded friendly, a term of endearment.

“Because that’s what I was,” Percy said simply.

Milly’s eyes grew wide and she nearly fell off her seat. “You were a Lord?”

“Lord Percival Monray was my name in Silverdon. I like being plain Percy much better.”

“It suits you more,” Brynn said.

Milly wanted to ask why Percy had given up his life as a Lord in Silverdon - and realised he gave her the answer yesterday.

“I know you’ve only been with them a few days,” Percy said quietly, “but you don’t have to see your time with Wolf-Lords as a chore.”

Milly was trying not to see it that way, but the difference between Percy and herself was Percy had chosen to live with Wolf-Lords. But then, her stay was only going to be for six months. His was for life.

He might not even be able to give a ring to Brynn on their wedding day.

“You can enjoy it, if you give it a chance.” Percy smiled reassuringly. “You might want to go and write your messages before it’s time to leave.”

Nearby, Malnaig villagers were placing small packets of supplies into bags, ready for the departure of the Andras Wolf-Lords.

“I don’t have any paper. Or pens.”

“Ask Keith the cook. He’ll help you.”

In the kitchen, Milly quickly scribbled two messages, one for her parents and the other for her friends. The one to her friends was almost the same as the one to her family, but there was a hidden sign inside she hoped they would find. She folded the messages carefully and gave them to Percy. The message to the girls was directed to Layden’s.

“Have a safe journey,” Percy told her, “and please remember what I said.”

“I will.” Milly shouldered her knapsack, said goodbye to Percy and Brynn and joined the Andras Wolf-Lords.

“Good luck,” Matthias said, shaking Andras’ hand. “Travel well.”

Andras nodded solemnly. “Thank you for everything, and for your advice.”

The two wolf queens moved closer and nudged each other with their muzzles. Then Aela turned around, tail held high and, together with Andras, led the travellers out of Malnaig.
