CHAPTER 6

I turn my head to the side and see Shane sleeping on her stomach, facing away from me. I lean up onto my forearm, staring down at her.

God, she’s so beautiful it hurts.

It’s been a week since we took things to the next level and what a week it’s been. I’ve never met a woman with such an appetite for sex, but it’s even more than that. The more time I spend with her, the harder it is to think about leaving her.

I don’t know what I’ve done in my life to deserve her, but I won’t take it for granted. Shane blew me away from the moment I met her and I haven’t come up for air since. I want her more than my next breath. Even if it means breaking my mother’s heart and settling down here instead of Ashville.

I lean over and brush a kiss on Shane’s cheek, then quietly slide out of bed. I slip into a pair of sweats and head downstairs. In the kitchen, I see Striker sitting there, staring at the tablet and drinking coffee.

“Morning,” I rasp, clearing my throat. “How was your night?”

“If the smirk on your face is any indication, not as good as yours.” Striker cringes. “Forget I said that, considering you’re sleeping with my sister.”

He shivers at the thought. I don’t blame him. I feel the same way about my sister. They will always be kids to us.

“I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that,” I sigh. “I’m not going to hurt her. I know this must be weird, but she’s amazing. Yeah, I know I haven’t known her for that long, but she makes me happy. She makes me feel like this could be the real deal.”

He smirks. “I’ll admit. It is weird thinking my best friend’s sleeping with my sister, but honestly? I know you won’t hurt her. You’re one of the best men I know. I couldn’t ask for someone better to take care of her. She deserves to be happy and you do that for her. In the last two weeks, I’ve seen her happier than ever. She smiles all the time. I even catch her humming to herself. She’s been so focused on the business that she doesn’t let herself live. You’re showing her she can do both. But I have one question for you, though.”

I brace myself for whatever it might be. “Ask away.”

“When are you going to tell your mother you’re planning to move here when you get out?”

I wince. “I haven’t thought about that yet. I mean, do you think Shane even wants me to move here?”

He pats my shoulder. “I think she not only wants you here in Serenity Valley, but in this house with her. I see how she looks at you. She isn’t thinking short term. She’s already imagined your wedding and the two-point-five kids you’re going to have. Add in the white picket fence you’ll likely be building in a year and I’d say you have your future all planned.
