Chapter 16

Willow

Once everyone stopped freaking out about me almost burning down my apartment, lunch conversation shifted to the plans for tomorrow’s dedication. Thank goodness. Because it seems like more than one thing has been brewing under the surface around here, and honestly, I’m not ready to fully examine all of the undercurrents yet.

Needing a few minutes to myself, I run back to our house with the excuse of grabbing my camera. Dad and Bob had decided to watch Sports Center after lunch, while Mom was helping Peggy put away the lunch leftovers. When I asked if I could help, they’d both shooed me away, told me to relax. I’m not sure where Mav has disappeared to, but that’s just as well for the moment.

Walking over to my house, I can’t help but ponder the meaning behind Mav not telling me he was moving to Roxford. Everyone seemed surprised he hadn’t said anything to me about it. How did both sets of parents know and no one told me? That really has me spinning.

And then there’s the tension between me and Dad. It’s been palpable since I walked through the door, but he’d said hello and gave me a hug. I know our disagreement will eventually come up; it just hasn’t yet. I’m ready to talk to him about how well my business is going even though I’m still upset and hurt by his lack of faith in my decision—his lack of faith in me.

Inside, I jog up the stairs to my bedroom to change. Figuring I’ll eventually go down to the lake, I unzip my suitcase and pull out one of my swimsuits. I quickly change into it, throw a sundress overtop, and slip into my favorite pair of flip-flops. After grabbing my camera out of my bag and finding my sunglasses, I descend the stairs, this time heading straight out our back door and onto the patio where the lake and the dock beckon to me. Maybe Mav and I can go for a swim later. I’ve always loved swimming at twilight when the fireflies come out.

Speak of the devil. It looks like Mav’s getting ready to take the boat out on the lake. Years ago, his parents bought a super fun deck boat. He’d always loved that thing, and we had the most fun riding around in it and tubing behind it, too. A trip out on the boat might be just what I need to clear my head. Hurrying, I race across the backyard.

“Mav!” Breathless, I hit the dock running. “Wait!”

His head whips around as he’s about to take off. “Hey! You want to come?”

I nod, coming to a stop at the end. With my camera in hand, I lift it, snapping a few photos of him in his happy place. Mav looks … good. He’s changed into a pair of swim trunks, and is wearing a T-shirt that stretches just right across his muscular chest. A pair of aviator sunglasses are perched on his nose, and he has the biggest smile on his face.
