~Chapter Four~

“So, how was your date?” Micah asked as they were getting suited up for early morning practice. He was curious how things were going because of the rivalry Mark created with Seattle. The way things were looking, they would be playing against them in the playoffs. Seattle, if they won their game tomorrow night against Chicago, would secure the final spot. The media frenzy would be out of this world. So he was concerned about the reputation of the team, not just Mark. He had also promised his father that he would stay on top of things.

“She’s amazing,” Mark said honestly while breaking into a telltale grin.

“But?”

Leave it to Micah to hear the reservations in his tone. He looked around to see if anyone else was listening before he answered him. Micah was one of the few guys on the team that wouldn’t reveal anything he told him no matter what the consequences. “You were right. She’s beautiful, fun, intelligent, she makes me laugh—” He released a sigh “—and a virgin.” He said that last part quietly so no one close could hear. Micah would never reveal his confidence no matter the circumstances.

It took a whole twenty seconds before Micah absorbed what his winger said, all the while, staring blankly at him. Then he burst into laughter and Micah wasn’t known for his sense of humor, but to him, this was funnier than hell. It was like the heavens were playing a cruel trick on Mark. He knew he was attracted to Selena. He’d seen the way he was looking at her yesterday during the family skate. He couldn’t blame him really, even Hailey liked her. He couldn’t recall one time that Hailey took to one of Mark’s girlfriends.

“Man, this isn’t funny.” Mark was beginning to feel the demon of frustration set in. He really liked Selena. He knew he left her hanging last night by not letting her know whether he was going to stick around or not, but he wasn’t ready to say goodbye either. “I can’t stop thinking about her.”

“No, it’s ironic.” Micah was still struggling to get his laughter under control.

“She wants me all to herself, that means no sex, no women besides her. Jesus Micah, I’m not a monk.”

So much for getting his laughter under control.

“You are an asshole.” Mark pulled his practice jersey roughly over his head. “I need your help. I’m crazy about her.”

“I have no sympathy for you man. You brought this on yourself. You had to have her, and now that you’ve managed to break every ethical rule to get her, you ended up with more than you bargained. It’s ironic.”

He didn’t deny it. “Leave it to me to be attracted to the most beautiful woman on the planet just to find out she’s a virgin. Fuck Micah. No one who looks like that is a virgin!” He whispered harshly to keep his voice from carrying to the other guys.

Micah suddenly became serious and met Mark’s eyes. “We recklessly walk all over women without a second thought and when we get pinched, it throws us.
