24 Hilly Lincs

Exploring the folds and furrows of the Lincolnshire Wolds

DIFFICULTY RATING 6/10 WILDNESS RATING 6/10

If you think Lincolnshire is flat, come to the Wolds. They are the highest land in eastern England between Yorkshire and Kent, geologically an extension of the Yorkshire Wolds, which they most resemble in the north. This ride, though, is in the south Wolds, where their domed summits and deep folds contrast with the low fenland that surrounds them.

Horncastle bills itself as the ‘Gateway to the Wolds’, which is a fair description, since ecclesiastically Horncastle is part of the Fen and Hill Deanery. It’s certainly the gateway to this ride. Start at the main A158/A153 crossroads near the centre of town and head south, going left after 3 kilometres. Head for Mareham-on-the-Hill, then Hameringham, where you turn left at the T-junction on the eastern edge of the village close to some trees.
