Chapter Five

After it happened, they hadn’t mentioned the kiss. Which was as well, because it was odd; it was an odd demonstration of God knows what. Mia couldn’t think. What she did know was that after the initial surprise, Sandra had placed her hand back on Mia’s hip, her thumb stroking along the very edge of that bony protrusion and the lower part of her belly, heat radiating from the firmness of her touch. It had made Mia’s breath hitch, her mind woozy with sudden vertigo. She had swayed on her feet, and Sandra had caught her, steadied her, as unyielding as the cool metal that held up the footplate of her chair and pressed against Mia’s shins.

Then, just as firmly, Sandra had pushed her away, with a wink and a “Later.”

And that had been that.

They had continued on to the Indian restaurant on the corner of the pedestrian street, where the owners had put in a miniature ramp of corrugated steel over the threshold, and where the waiting staff seemed all to be on a first-name basis with Sandra.

“You come here often?” Mia had asked, realising too late it sounded like a parody of a pick-up line.

“Linda and I used to come here all the time before the band took off.” Sandra flipped open her menu. “Their palak paneer is unbeatable.”

Linda Ling. Mia was nonplussed. Linda Ling was all that—but somehow, Mia seemed to have forgotten what that was. Forget about Linda. Since when had Mia the Dykemaker Andersson started to follow instructions to a T?

“You’re not identical.”

The corner of Sandra’s mouth twitched, and damn, if it wasn’t the sexiest thing…

“We’re more alike than you’d think, if you subtract the hair dye and the contacts, and add in a few extra kilos and some wheels. She’s pretty hot on wheels, actually. Used to steal my ride all the time when we were kids.”

“Oh, so you were only a child when…” Mia had bit her tongue, quite literally. She took a swig of the water the waiter had brought over, wishing it had been something stronger.

Sandra looked at her blankly. “When?”

Mia squirmed in her seat, but there was nothing for it. “When you had your accident. Sorry, I—”

To her consternation, Sandra guffawed. “No, no, I’m no accident. I was born this way. I forget sometimes that people—I’ve got spina bifida myelomeningocele, or, in layman’s terms: these legs were not made for walking. I’m completely paralysed from the waist down, always have been. And now that we’ve got that out of the way, tell me: do you really enjoy the Raven Choir’s particular brand of music?”

Mia had had to pick her dropped jaw up off the floor. It wasn’t graceful. “Well…” she had hedged, but she was already shaking her head, almost involuntarily.

“That’s what I thought.” Sandra had winked at her for the second time that night. “You ready to order, or do you want me to do the honours?”

“Please.” Mia changed her telltale shake of the head into a nod.
