Chapter 14

Wild crouched behind a pile of rubble, his eyes fixed on the compound where the kidnapped politician was being held. The faint sound of laughter drifted from somewhere inside the compound. It was a cruel mockery of him, his team, and everything Wild stood for.

He clenched his jaw, frustration simmering beneath the surface. What pissed him off the most was that the politician had walked into this mess thinking he could negotiate with a terrorist. Of course, terrorists weren’t reliable, and he’d been taken hostage. Wild wasn’t sure how the man thought coming here would work out for him, but now the US government had to spend millions in personnel and equipment costs to get him back.

“Man, I wish he’d just learn the hard way,” Bear muttered beside him, echoing Wild’s thoughts.

“Too bad we’re not that lucky,” Andy chimed in, his rifle gripped tightly in his hands.

Wild nodded silently, knowing they couldn’t afford to let their emotions cloud their judgment. It was time to act.

“Looks like we’re up,” Jax said.

“I’m ready to do this,” Wild chimed in.

Jax signaled for the team to move forward. Peach and Harry slipped ahead, taking point as they entered the compound’s perimeter. Wild watched for anyone trying to ambush them.

As they moved stealthily through the shadows, the smell of something burning filled the air, mingling with the acrid scent of gunpowder. It was the scent of desperation he’d smelled in multiple war zones and compounds like this across the globe.

Anticipation stirred within as his adrenaline picked up. Excitement flowed like liquid fire through him. He could almost taste the danger—that familiar metallic tang that always accompanied a dangerous mission.

“Two hostiles at Wild’s nine o’clock,” Bear warned quietly through the earpiece.

“Got it,” Wild responded. He disappeared behind a low wall and waited for the hostiles to approach. Five seconds later, Wild heard the scuff of their boot.

Amateurs.

Wild struck as he rose, his knife sliding into the man’s side. Then he pulled the knife out before sliding it across the man’s neck. The second man was expecting him, and Wild had to fight. It took about a minute to put the man down.

“Damn, Wild, you never miss, do you?” Peach said over coms.

Wild chuckled, then fell in behind the group. He felt better having taken two of these bastards out.

“We’re getting close,” Jax said.

Determination filled Wild, burning deep in his soul. Inside the building was a labyrinth of corridors and rooms.

The sounds in the compound changed like the people inside knew something was amiss. The tension grew, and he checked to make sure he was ready.

Suddenly, a man stepped from a door, and Jax opened fire, dropping him. Now they’d alerted the enemy they were there. Wild hung back, protecting their six. More gunfire echoed in the corridor, but it wasn’t aimed at them.

Wild’s senses were on high alert, every nerve in his body humming with an energy that both exhilarated and terrified him.

“Room up ahead,” Harry said over the coms. “I think our guy’s in there.
