After my ordeal with the Venables, I was glad to get back to the cottage. Wendy and I then had a few words, and she threatened to leave. So I told her I didn’t feel very well and pretended I’d caught a cold from standing in Mr Venables’ shed. I really laid it on thick about people leaving me. I felt a bit guilty about that, but it was the only way I could get her to stay.

Anyway, we’ve both calmed down and she’s not annoying me quite so much this evening. Perhaps it’s because I know I won’t have to see her after tomorrow, and after that it’s goodbye, Wendy!

‘Jill, I really think you should call the police; just tell them what happened yesterday. It gives me chills thinking that Venables could do that to someone else – some kid? And don’t forget the Tim connection!’

You know a few seconds ago when I said she wasn’t annoying me quite so much? Well, now she is, because she’s trying to convince me that Tim knew something about Leo’s murder. The Tim connection indeed! She must think I’m stupid; does she really think I have no mind of my own, that I’m so suggestible I’ll just be convinced by everything she’s saying? She wants me to call the police and point the finger at Tim now, and given the circumstances, that’s the last thing I’m going to do. Her influence might have worked twenty years ago when she told me to paint my walls blue, or pronounced that a kitchen island was the only way forward, but I’ve grown up and this is about more than domestic interiors.

Honestly, she’s like a search light, constantly on the lookout for someone she can shine the light on so it will be taken off Olivia. It’s always someone else – well, anyone else she can implicate. But my spotlight has never wavered, and regardless of what she says, or how weird the Venableses are, I will still be including Little Miss Perfect in my list of suspects.

‘I’ll admit it was a shock to see Tim’s photo on the shed wall,’ I concede. ‘I think it’s odd – but it isn’t incriminating, and I’m sure there’s a logical reason. Mrs Venables doesn’t know, but I’ll ask Mr Venables before I leave.’

‘What… how was the relationship between Tim and Leo?’ she suddenly asks.

I wonder what she’s up to now. ‘Fine,’ I reply, irritated.

‘It’s just that I remember Tim saying Leo had become quite difficult and they argued?’

‘I thought you didn’t speak to Tim much?’

‘It wasn’t Tim who told me, Lena did. Marek said Tim told him that he and Leo weren’t getting along.’

‘Rubbish,’ I say, ‘they were fine.’ I cast my mind back to those last few months of Leo’s life; he’d changed towards both of us, and Tim had remarked on this several times after Leo’s trip here.

‘Everything I say is wrong. I can’t seem to reach him any more,’ he’d said. I felt exactly the same, but at the time, we’d both put it down to him being a stroppy teenager.
