'Look, love, you're talking about play-acting a fantasy here,' she expanded, somewhat impatiently. 'What the hell's that got to do with how you feel about anything in real life? Fantasy is as far from real life as you want it to be. And like I've told you before, in fantasy any-thing's OK, everything is.'
'Ah yes, but Hils,' Suzie argued, 'tonight I'll be living
this fantasy, won't I? Actually doing it. Making Michael
/
'No,' Hilary cut in. 'Not making Michael anything, if that's not what you want. Tonight he needn't be Michael. He can be whoever you want him to be: your slave, that flippin' Viking you're always on about, whoever, but only as much Michael as you want him to be.
'You want my advice? Enjoy it, love. Do whatever you want with him. And afterwards, when the fantasy's over and you're back in the real world, Michael will be Michael again and you'll feel about him just as you do now.'
'Mmm,' Suzie muttered, not entirely convinced.
Hilary threw a long-suffering glance at the ceiling, but persisted stoically. 'Look, you say you respect him, right? Well, does it work the other way? Does he respect
you?'
'He loves me, Hils. He told me last night, oh God, for the first time, he told me last night: it still makes me feel all gooey inside. And yes, of course he respects me; he always has.'
'Right. Yet he dominates you, doesn't he? Makes you do things that are humiliating? Things that, in any other context, would be degrading or demeaning? But what he does to you in bed, love - in sex, in fantasy - doesn't change how he feels about you, the real-life Suzie Carlton, does it? Whatever he does to you in bed, or out of it he still respects you, right?'
Suzie stared at her coffee and took a moment to allow this to sink in: she'd never thought about it in such terms before. But yes, it was true: no matter what Michael did to her sexually, non-sexually - in real life -he treated her with all the respect in the world; she couldn't imagine a more caring, considerate man. And no matter what he had made her do, had seen her do in bed, afterwards he certainly didn't look at her with disdain or derision. As Hilary had said, the two - fantasy and real life - were entirely separate.
And Hilary had been right in the other regard too. Hadn't Michael said it himself? He would be her sex-slave, he had said. Tonight he wouldn't be Michael, but her sex-slave; a different persona. And she, Suzie, needn't be Suzie, but, who? Mistress Suzie, yes.
A sexual frisson tingled her loins, and she looked up feeling suddenly much brighter.
'You know, Hils,' she said, as ever grateful for her friend's practical wisdom, 'thank God I've got you. Because you're right, of course. Just as you always are.'
Hilary pointed a finger. 'Then let me give you another piece of advice too, then, seeing as I'm on a roll.
