âSO, how did Landon and Bay enjoy the festival last night?â I asked several hours later, leaning back in one of my lawn chairs and watching Clove sip from her glass of iced tea.
After three hours of work, gossip and laughter, we were both relaxed. We decided to take a break in the shade. Even though it was spring and the weather wasnât overly warm, the sun was strong enough to cause me to shed my jacket and Cloveâs cheeks to pink up over the course of our morning chores.
âThey had a good time,â Clove replied. âBay said Landon got fresh in the funhouse, and Landon said Bay ate enough junk food to make an entire kindergarten class throw up.â
âSounds like fun,â I said. âAre you sorry we didnât go?â
âNot particularly,â Clove answered, not missing a beat. âIâm glad we had a chance to hang out by ourselves. Are you sorry we didnât go?â
âNot really,â I said. âDonât get me wrong, Iâm a big fan of a good festival. You were more fun than ten festivals last night. We made the right decision. Iâm sure there will be plenty of other festivals to attend.â
âYouâre charming when you want to be,â Clove said.
âThank you.â
âWhy are you only charming with me?â
That was an odd â and difficult â question. âWhat makes you think that Iâm charming only with you?â
âWhen you answer a question with a question, that means youâre uncomfortable,â Clove said. âBay taught me that.â
âWho taught her that?â I asked. âIt was Landon, wasnât it?â
âNo,â Clove said, shaking her head. âBay came up with that one on her own. I think she learned it from interviewing people for the newspaper.â
âDo the people of Hemlock Cove often answer questions with questions?â
âYou did it again.â
I sighed, exasperated. âI try to be charming with everyone,â I explained. âYou get an extra dose because youâre so cute.â
âThatâs still not an answer,â Clove pressed. âIt was a very enjoyable attempt at flirting, though.â
âI assume weâre back to talking about my problems with Bay and Landon,â I said, tamping down my frustration. âI tried to be charming with Bay, and that backfired. I donât know what you want me to say.â
âYou didnât try charming Bay,â Clove argued. âYou lied to her about why you were in Hemlock Cove, annoyed her by siding with Brian Kelly about stupid ways to increase The Whistlerâs circulation, and then ambushed her when she was especially vulnerable.â
âHow was she especially vulnerable?â I asked, genuinely curious. âI waited until you guys found those kids on the ship. She shouldâve been happy that day. You were heroes, and everyone in town was talking about you.â
âWe didnât save all of the kids,â Clove clarified. âThere was a dead girl on that ship. We were too late to save her.â
âI ⦠never thought about that,â I admitted, embarrassed at missing a big clue that wouldâve at least partly explained Bayâs behavior. âDid Bay see her ghost?â
âBay did see her ghost,â Clove confirmed. âBay also saw another ghost named Erika.
