Chapter Eleven
“What?” Willow demanded. “I’ve never made any secret of what I gathered all of you together for. Why are we having this conversation again?” She threw up her hands. “God, I feel like I’m listening to the same song stuck on repeat on the stereo. Can’t you guys just give it a rest?”
“How can you be so cavalier about something this important?” Njeri demanded. “We wouldn’t keep bringing it up if we weren’t so worried about it.” She looked at the other women seated here and there around the loft and got nods of agreement. “If we didn’t feel that we aren’t safe.”
“I am not ‘cavalier’!” Willow threw up her hands. “I made you a golem, for crying out loud. There is no safer place in Sunnydale than where you are right now!”
“Exactly.” Ena’s calmer voice rose from the rear corner of the room, where she’d settled onto one of the full-sized floor pillows. “But we certainly can’t stay here all the time, now can we? Not twenty-four/seven.” She glanced around. “While you’ve decorated quite attractively, it’s just not set up to be the Hellmouth’s version of the Ritz Carlton.” There were a few halfhearted chuckles. “You’ve barely room to keep poor Flo comfortable, and that’s only because of her perpetual sleep.”
“Yeah,” agreed Ellen. “Come on, Willow. As employers go, you need to up the benefits.”
Willow’s mouth worked, but before she could think of anything to say, Anan had her own comments to throw into the criticism pot. “Offense would be nice,” she said in a biting tone. “As a general would do in any good war. The two sides don’t just stay in a no-win situation, you know. One always takes the offensive.”
Willow shot the blond-haired witch an annoyed look. “This isn’t a war. I don’t have anything to fight over—”
“What about our safety?” demanded Njeri again. “Why isn’t that worthy enough for you?”
“But you are safe. I just told you—”
“We’re safe here, Willow,” Ena said. “But what happens when we leave here? The former Watcher and the Slayer are quite powerful, and they have that vengeance demon convinced, at least for now, that she should be on their side.” She looked at Willow through half-closed lids. “What happens when your friends decide to pick us off, one by one?”
“They’re not my friends anymore,” Willow said hotly. “They—”
“Then why aren’t you willing to do something about them?” Anan asked. “Why do you keep stalling?”
Willow stared at Anan, then ground her teeth together. “Fine,” she said shortly. “You want offensive, that’s what you’ll get.” Face flushed with anger, she clapped her hands three times. “Come to me,” she hissed as the last bit of the third sound faded away. No one said anything, and that was a good thing, a safe thing. At the moment, she was angry enough to lash out at anything, and while it might have given her some temporary satisfaction, she had enough common sense to know that punishment was the last thing these women needed right now.
