Melody

As I opened the door, shame hugged me like an unwanted jacket on a sunny summer day. Ryker was in the room next to where I had ridden Harrison. Harrison still lay on the bed, angry that I hadn't bitten him and started my pod. I was ready to start, or at least my instinct told me to. I was furious with myself. The way Axel had looked at me before he left the bathroom. I'd made him more than uncomfortable. I’d hurt him, and I needed to understand how and why. And Ryker, I didn't understand him. Until I knew how to handle these guys, I needed to take it slow.

“Harry?”

His hair fell in his face, hiding him. “Melody.”

“Order doesn’t matter.”

He knew that I was talking about pods. He gathered his hair away from his face. “No, but not having a spot left for me does.”

I nodded. I didn’t understand myself why I was holding back. I couldn’t explain it to him.

He looked away from me as he put on his clothes.

I opened the door to the hall and peeked in the other room.

Ryker glared at me as he picked up glass off the floor. "There's pizza downstairs if you're hungry."

"I thought I smelled food." Harry scooted past me. "Are you coming?" He pulled his hair back into a tie. I had done a number on it.

I glanced at the mirror over the dresser in the other room, near where Ryker was picking up the glass.

"You look fine, princess, no worse for wear. I'm sure he'll be ready for round two in no time." Ryker’s words fired at me.

My blood curdled at his poisonous tone. What had I done to him? I had sex. So what? He was a shifter too. Zara said that shifters enjoyed sex as much as we did. I mean, there were lots of shifters in Skyrothasia. My dad was one. Not that I wanted to think about the royal pod in that . . . way. Nope. “Where’s Axel?”

“Out.”

I had my skort back on and my winter coat. My legs were freezing, but I wasn't going to say anything to Ryker about it. I ignored his scowl. "Well, you know what they say: sex is good for stress."

“Wouldn't know. I don't get stressed. I can control myself.” Ryker stood by the window, staring down at the street.

“Not too hard with the rod up your ass." I didn't know what made me say it. I guess I was tired of his better-than-me attitude. I trusted my fathers’ judgement. Maybe too much. They believed Ryker could protect me, but I was having second thoughts about that myself.

He growled and turned his back on me, putting pieces of glass in a small trash can. I headed downstairs. Harry was eating pizza and drinking a beer. A sports game blared on the TV. He nodded at it as the announcer spouted game statistics. I'd watched games with him before but not since he'd gone to school. In a way, it was like he thought I'd stopped growing once he headed off to Boston.
