Chapter 23
Beckett
âI regret nothing.â
âPsh, I wouldnât either.â Kylian stepped out of my portal behind me and looked around at the dried dead grass. âSince I didnât lead you here this time, where are we?â
âShh.â I froze, waiting. We were on the outskirts of one of the most dangerous places in the world. But it was a fun kind of dangerous.
Kylian lowered his voice. âWhy am I whispering?â
âWait for it.â It was getting later in the morning, and I knew we were sitting ducks. Then I felt it. The air moved ever so slightly, and I shifted to the side just as a blade soared right past me and embedded into the tree behind me. A second later, I heard it again. I grabbed Kylian and shoved him back. The blade barely skimmed his arm, but it was enough to cut through his lightweight black sweater and left a wound on his bicep.
He looked down at his cut, clutched the hilt of the knife, and yanked it from the tree. He hauled back his arm, ready to let it fly.
I grabbed his wrist, stopping him. âHold up.â
âYour friend is too slow.â Mazeâs mother stepped out from between the trees. Her hair was a tangled mess of midnight and gray. It was pulled back from her face and fell in a single long twist along the side of her body. Heavy makeup covered her face. Dark coal lined her eyes, bright red rouged her cheeks, and obnoxious red lipstick colored her lips. She shared the same green eyes, pale skin, and dark hair as Maze.
âIâll show you slow.â Kylian jerked at his arm, but I didnât let it go. I simply shook my head.
âFine.â He held the knife out toward her. âBut Iâm keeping this.â
âAlba. Itâs good to see you again.â I turned to face her as she moved closer.
She looked me up and down. âHaving a Dustwick here is never a good sign⦠even if I like you.â
I felt my lips tug into a smile. âYeah, I missed you too.â
âWhy are you here?â She glanced over my shoulder at Kylian. âAnd with the dark prince? What, my son isnât dark enough for you?â
I chuckled. âMaze likely already knows Iâm here. Which is why we need to hurry. I have business with her.â
Albaâs face fell. âNo, any business with her isnât for a good thing.â
âIt never is. Still, it needs to be done.â I was on a path now with only one more task to complete and I would be free. Ready to move to the next level.
âIs there another way? The priceâ¦â Her words lilted with the singsong way of speaking that came with her Spanish heritage.
âIâll pay it. There is no other way.â I placed my hands on my hips and didnât move. There was nothing more I could say or do. This was where I was, and she needed to take me to the crone or I would figure out another way to get there.
âMazereil isnât going to like this.
