Zoriah

In spite of my weakened state, I muster what I can of my strength and drag myself off the floor. I cross the narrow length of the dungeon and shakily reach for the gate. My hands tremble but it’s not from exhaustion anymore. It’s from adrenaline. Seconds ago I was on the verge of passing out. Now I feel like I could run a marathon as an intense burst of energy tingles down my spine, regenerating my body.

Grasping the iron bars, I peer through them in search of any signs of life. Although I cannot see anyone in the near darkness, howls and battle cries fill the night air. Threaded amongst them is the distinctive smell of light fae. Not again. Their attack, however, gives me a moment of staggering clarity.

I’m alone.

Completely and utterly alone.

There’s no grumpy beta standing outside my dungeon. No alphas playing tricks with my mind and body.

It’s just me, and standing in the way of my freedom are iron bars.

A sudden urge to escape consumes me. An attack on the compound is a perfect opportunity to escape. If I could just reach the trees, I’ll be able to make my way to a river and swim through it to mask my scent. From there, I’m not entirely sure, but anything is better than being held prisoner while my best friend suffers.

I can’t just sit in this dungeon while Tristen endures goddess knows what, so I grab the bars and pull. The wrought-iron shrieks as I yank them apart, and to my astonishment, they bend. Enough for me to squeeze through them.

More screams and snarls echo outside, causing a shudder to rake through my body. I tiptoe down the dimly lit corridor. The wooden door at the end has either been left open or broken. Judging by the part of the door that’s hanging off the hinges, I’m going to go with the latter.

Looks like someone tried to get through.

I take a deep breath and my stomach heaves at the scent cloying the air.

It is Solas.

Or at least, the light fae mercenaries hired by him. I’ll never understand why anyone would want to do that let alone fae capable of shifting into wolves. Then again, Solas had me convinced he would be a good mate for me and that I was special to him. A derisive scoff escapes me, more out of nerves from the situation than anything. He’s the most manipulative creature to ever walk the realm.

I gently open the door and peek out into the open. Dark wolves wrestle light fae wolves to the ground while a fire has been lit near the temple. Its orange flames stretch toward the inky-black sky like a fire demon. It’s utter chaos around me, but this may be my only chance to escape.

Now that I can shift, I can save Tristan myself.

I don’t need an alpha for help anymore. I am one. My strength in wolf form should be able to rival that of Solas.’ I could even challenge him for the place of alpha.
