CHARLOTTE never ever imagined she would say this but she felt the week flew by too quickly. The lessons with Brinkley did not feel awkward anymore but rather she got used to the lectures, lessons, practices and of course the frustration. Charlotte really had to admit Brinkley was a great teacher. Sure, just the fact that she could do these strange things with this newfound power was exciting enough but it took a lot of hard work to get a good grasp of the ability and Brinkley definitely made it a lot easier. He was not only encouraging but surprisingly patient. She felt like she was living two separate lives now. A mysterious exciting one by day and a boring bland one by night. Yes, it sucked to have to keep it a secret but it wasn’t like she minded. She was in no hurry to let the whole world know she was now a freak. However she liked the feeling of how her fingertips tinkle and her heart race with excitement as she looked about her and realized that she was now special.

Today was different somehow. Charlotte thought the lessons would only be during the Spring Break weekdays but Brinkley took her by surprise Friday evening. They were wrapping up when he told her he would pick her up at her house the next morning. Unsure what he had planned for her – she had not forgotten the ordeal at the amusement park – she prepared herself mentally for any kind of horrid surprises.

The now all too familiar blue Mitsubishi pulled up the curb outside her house with a screech whipping up a sudden breeze. Despite the warm spring weather the breeze still caused her to pull her thin trench coat tighter around her. Without a word, Charlotte quickly stepped in.

“What? No breakfast for me today?” Brinkley teased. He must be in a good mood.

“What are we doing today? Where are we going?” Trying not to appear too worried lest she would sound like she’s being kidnapped, which was not far from what she was feeling.

“You’ll know when we get there.” His mouth twisted to one side into his signature mischievous smile. “Why? Nervous?”

“No.” Charlotte lied, trying to shake the awkwardness that it seemed only she was experiencing. She told herself she was just feeling this way because this was not a normal lesson and they were not in the office.

“No questions today from the good student?”

“Right,” She took out her notebook again. She had fewer questions now than when they first started but she had a mission today. She started with the first question on her notebook. “Why are the notes in your notebook written in Old English?”

“Ah. Good question.” Brinkley said as he turned the wheel. “Every element, everything in this world did not have names when they first came to be. The first words that were ever discovered and uttered to call upon them hold the truest meaning of their essence. Over the ages, the æltæwe nama, the true names of these elements, were lost.
