CHAPTER 5
Donald Trump Won. Is America Now Safe?
It is clear that when General Mike Flynn described the election of November 8, 2016, as a peaceful “political revolution,” he was absolutely right. The day America chose Donald J. Trump, a man who had never held political office before, to hold the most powerful position in the land, politics in the republic changed irrevocably.
We should remind ourselves of the situation then. The Democrats had a candidate who virtually owned the mainstream media: on the night of the election, the New York Times declared that Hillary Clinton had a greater than ninety percent chance of winning the presidency. She had spent $1.4 billion on a campaign in which she made it clear that she was entitled to become president because of her sex and last name. Nevertheless, a real estate magnate and reality television star defeated her.
How did that happen, and what does this mean for the future of conservative ideas? The answers to these weighty questions are not always clear. Donald J. Trump defeated more than a dozen establishment Republicans for the nomination, yet since becoming president, he has implemented policy after policy that would please the most traditional Reaganite conservative. Are we therefore safer? Are we better prepared to deter, and if necessary defeat, our adversaries? Can we finally push back on the political correctness that has hobbled us for decades? These are the most important questions we face today.
I have given hundreds of interviews over the years. Most are quite brief, frequently no more than three minutes. It is challenging, to say the least, to tackle large and strategically important issues when all you have is two hundred or so seconds! There are places, however, where one can really get into the substance of an issue or even open up in a more personal way about how one sees the world and thus provide deeper insight into the threats we face. One such platform is John Batchelor’s radio show out of New York, an absolute favorite of mine, where I have been a regular guest on Thursday nights for almost a decade now. A show where the host has discussions with his guests that last for half an hour, sometimes a full hour. Similarly, Larry Elder’s show and Dennis Prager’s, and the rest of the faculty who have truly substantive programs on the Salem Radio Network.
But the most satisfying, meaningful, and personal interview I have had of late was with Dave Rubin of The Rubin Report. A former progressive, Dave calls himself a “classical liberal” with libertarian leanings. He has amassed a large following on YouTube and for his podcasts, in part, as far as I am concerned, because of his fairness, humble inquisitiveness, and natural ability to make his subjects open up on camera.1
He and I first met at a Turning Point USA2 conference where I spoke on my time in the White House, the national security vision of the president, and the undying bond between America and the nation of Israel.
