We might add, for the record, that in addition to travel writing, there is actually a second entire genre of books, those dealing with international business and social etiquette, which likewise set forth an enormous panoply of cultural differences. These volumes meticulously describe all the dos, donts, and taboos that foreign visitors must be careful not to run afoul of. The section headings of these volumes, usually covering a large number of countries, suggest the myriad surprises awaiting the uninformed: dress, greetings, leave-taking, names/titles/forms of address, gift giving, dining out, guest etiquette, table manners, tipping, driving, taxi etiquette, meeting manners, giving presentations, humor, conversation style, taboo topics, and punctuality.

The world is full of the unfamiliar, the unexpected, and the extraordinary. Travelers react in various ways to all these differences; they are in awe of some of them and alarmed by others; they heartily approve of some and are thoroughly disgusted by others; they are offended by some and delighted by others; they are by turns shocked, surprised, amused, frustrated, annoyed, and fascinated. But they are never unmoved.
