His conclusion is that gig economy companies are ‘using reputation systems as a front for centralized and unaccountable disciplinary styles of management.’ They substitute compliance with the sort of regulation that conventional businesses – taxis, hotels – have to obey, for a system of customer ratings, and they use those same ratings as a way of disciplining and punishing their ‘employees’, the contractors who drive the cars or supply the rooms. As Slee points out:

When things go badly wrong, customers do not want to post a three-star review, they want a direct line to the company itself, and ... this is not always available: Uber has had an F rating from the Better Business Bureau for some time, primarily because of its persistent failure to respond to customer complaints.
