With a thud, Odin fell on the ground, landing on his butt rather than face, presumably disappointing Verðandi. It must have been Skuldâs fault. From what he had understood, she will have has⦠no⦠heâd forgotten how to speak normal Goddish, but will soon have remembered⦠for now, he had the runes and the seventeen charms. Which was really quite exciting, but not as exciting as the forest fire raging way closer to the Tree than it should.
âLoki!â Odin cried out. If his brother were to repeatedly die and return, Odinâs nerves simply wouldnât be able to take it. Was one out of the seventeen charms useful for burning forests? No, for un-burning them? Odin produced a quick downpour, then tried to sigh in relief.
Oh.
The spear was still there. His lung had only shouted for Loki because it had been too distracted by the blaze.
âMy fire!â Loki cried, appearing next to Odin. âIt was so pretty!â
âMmpf?â
âI was sitting by a fire, when you wereââ Loki gestured ââand it is so beautiful to watch. I love beauty. Whatâs more beautiful than beauty? More beauty!â He smiled. âOne day Iâll create the biggest fire ever⦠oh, my apologies, how selfish of me. Here I am, talking about my hopes and dreams for the future, while you still have that spear in you.â
Odin nodded weakly.
âI stand here, doing nothing but talking about my taste in decoration,â Loki sighed. âMaybe I could create an eternal fire. One that no rain could extinguish, swallowing the entire Universeâ¦â
Loki is foreshadowing, said literature.
What is literature? asked Odinâs mind, since his actual voice was currently unavailable.
There was no answer, apart from the sound of literatureâs sneakers as she sprinted away.
âSorry! Sorry! The spear. Can you tell me what to do with it? No, you canât. Hmmm. I think your wife will be very nervous by now. You look really bad, too. Maybe you should bathe a bit. Youâre a bitâ¦covered in blood. Do you think you could bathe with that spear?â
Odin coughed and a wave of pain went through his entire body.
âItâs just that I donât have experience with removing spears from All-Fathers,â Loki said. âThrough your back, no? Because otherwise the⦠spear-head goes through you again and thatâs going to hurt worse. Oh, hang on. Hahaha, I made a joke! âHang onâ, so good. Iâll keep it in mind. Anyway. Do you still need to suffer?â
Even if Odin could utter one of his brand new seventeen charms, none of them would shut Loki up. He could only glare and wait.
âIâm going to pull it through your back. Ready? Three⦠twoâ¦â
âAaaaaahhhhh!!!â
âThis is sharp!â Loki cried. âI didnât even get to say âoneâ and I cut my finger! Now I have a boo-boo. Look!â He nearly poked Odinâs eye out as he demonstrated the scratched digit. âSee? And I canât even ask my Mummy to kiss it, because sheâs dead!â
âKiss what?â
âMy boo-boo⦠I feel very strange,â Loki groaned, slowly dropping to his knees. âVery strange.â
Odin, who had
