The rest of the night unfolded as a series of disconnected but related events. Hitler was unable to reach the Engineer Barracks, where seven men under the command of Captain Oskar Cantzler managed to trap 400 men from the Kampfbund in the drill hall and lock them in.' Meanwhile, Major General Jakob von Danner, the city commandant of Munich, made a personal reconnaissance in civilian clothes. Determining that a rebellion was definitely in progress and that Wehrkreis headquarters was in enemy hands, he returned to his own HQ and started telephoning every Reichswehr unit in Bavaria, telling them to converge on Munich at once. Some time later Lossow himself arrived, and they were soon joined by Kress von Kressenstein and another general. The four commanders decided to concentrate all the army forces they could against the putsch, but to keep the news of Lossow's defection secret as long as possible to prevent Hitler and Ludendorff from organizing countermeasures. Then, deciding that their HQ was too deep inside enemy-held territory, they decided to relocate to the headquarters of the 19th Infantry Regiment. From here they set up an anti-Putsch command post (CP).

Meanwhile, Colonel Ritter von Seisser was out in the city, organizing police units for use against the putschists. Gustav von Kahr went to his headquarters, the Generalstaatskommissariat, where he was joined by Seisser around midnight. The pair were almost recaptured by Lieutenant Rossbach, who was leading 350 officers and cadets from the Infantry School, but they managed to escape because the soldiers refused to fire on a small defending detachment of Green Police, many of whom were also combat veterans. Following this near disaster, Kahr and Seisser joined Lossow at his CP about 1 A.M. United again, the triumvirate worked in harness to put down Adolf Hitler's "national revolution."
