People who live in Calgary don’t talk about their city for long before the conversation turns to the mountain biking, the skiing, the hiking, and the fact that the city is as fun as its surroundings are beautiful.

Cultural offerings are also crucial in understanding the aesthetic appeal of a city, and again Canadian metros have qualities that make them nearly unique in the world: their multicultural vibrancy. I hear again and again how much Canadians love the food and music and cosmopolitanism that come with living in a city made up of people from around the world. But Canada boasts another cultural dimension that few other countries can match: its French heritage and the bilingualism that comes with it. Quebec’s cities offer a continental sophistication and cultural difference that can make living there feel like stepping into a foreign country. Here is what Brad Smith says about moving to Montreal:

My original goal was to work abroad in a foreign language for a few years and then return to Canada. But I happened to get a summer internship at L’Oréal in Montreal and changed my mind when I met my wife here. I realized I could get a foreign language experience without even leaving Canada. I speak French at home and about 50/50 at work. Quebec in general, and Montreal in particular, are places with big challenges ahead of them (demographic, cultural, economic) but to me that makes it an exciting place to be.
