Chapter 11

Clancy was surprised when he fell asleep, and pleased when he woke up from his nap starving but relatively pain-free. Still, he didn’t plan on taking any chances. He wouldn’t leave the house for any reason in the next three days, not until he had to go to the hospital for his surgery on Monday.

The house was quiet, and light from the streetlight filtered through the blinds he hadn’t thought to close earlier. How much had the guys gotten done? Did Dan get back with the tools, and was the wall up? Had they finished putting the furniture together? Would he have to haul his ass upstairs to see what was going on?

“Tune in tomorrow, same bat-time, same bat-channel.” Clance couldn’t help snickering at himself, although truthfully, going up those stairs was the last thing he wanted to do.

He eased out of bed and padded carefully down the hall to the living room. Dave was sitting in Clancy’s recliner, while Dan and Leo sprawled on the sofa and Den lounged on a chair from the dining room. They all held bottles of beer, and ESPN was playing on the flat-screen on the wall.

Clancy shivered. They were watching the replay of the All-Stars Game. “Geez, you guys are gluttons for punishment. Do you really want to see that?”

“Hey, it’s Sleeping Beauty.”

“Ha fucking hah. You didn’t answer my question.”

Dave looked over at him. “We keep hoping for a different outcome.”

“Yeah,” Leo said. “If we’d been there—”

“No. Don’t do that. It wouldn’t have made any difference.”

“You sure?”

“Yeah. I am.” The last thing he wanted was for his friends to feel guilty about something none of them would have been able to control. He noticed the pizza boxes on the coffee table. “I hope you left some pizza for me.”

“Of course we did. It’s in the warming drawer. Want a beer?”

“I’d love one.” He sighed. “But I can’t have one. I took some naproxen earlier.”

“Bummer.”

“Don’t remind me.” He went into the kitchen, opened the oven’s warming drawer, and took out the first slice. Then he took a can of soda from the fridge, returned to the living room, and sat between Leo and Dan. “So how’s it going with the furniture?” He put the can on the coffee table and smiled his thanks when Leo popped it open. “Is the room ready?”

“Well, the drywall is up, and we papered it.”

Den, Dan, and Leo snickered, and Clancy wanted to roll his eyes. What was it with them?

“But as for the rest…” Dave said, apparently unaware. He belched. “‘Scuse me. Not quite.”

“Do I have to go up there and check your work?”

Leo bolted upright. “No!”

“Sure,” Dave contradicted.

“Which is it?”

Dave glared at Leo, probably thinking Clancy didn’t see. Then Dave turned to Clance with an innocent smile. “You can come up and look if you want. We do have most of the furniture put together, and we did an amazing job if I say so myself.” Dave dusted his knuckles against his shoulder. “However, we still need to finish a few things.
