“Wow!” Travis said as he walked into the house. “It looks great. You’ve done a lot, Brody.”

With a smile and push of my hand through my hair, I nodded as I looked around. “So you’re really here to stay?”

“You bet I am. I figured there was really nothing in Texas for me. I really love it here and could totally see me making a life here. Hey, your mom said they are still planning on coming out to visit. They want to see Brynlee something terrible.”

I sighed. “Yeah, I know they do. Katherine is still planning on coming too.”

“I’m sure Brynlee will be excited to see them. Speaking of Brynlee. How are things going?”

“Slow, but that’s good. She’s been through a lot the last few weeks. We had a few setbacks, but I think the healing between us is going pretty damn good.”

Travis smiled. “Be patient.”

“Ha! That is what everyone keeps telling me. I’m trying to be patient, trying to be strong, trying to be positive. All I really want is to reverse the clock and change all of this.”

Travis nodded and placed his hand on my shoulder. With a slight squeeze, he gave me a sympathetic look. “Nothing worth having ever came easy. The fight will be worth it in the long run. I promise.”

With a smile and a nod of agreement, I said, “California has already made you smarter.”

Travis threw his head back and laughed. “Come on, let’s open a bottle of wine and catch up.”

I wasn’t going to admit it to Travis, but having him here meant the world to me. He was more than my best friend. He was my brother and I would never forget what he had done for me.

My mind drifted to Brynlee as I popped open a bottle of wine. For the next few hours, Travis and I talked on the back porch.
