London Bridge

Completed in the early thirteenth century as England’s first stone arch bridge, London Bridge spans the river Thames in the center of London. The bridge was the only road across the river in London until Westminster Bridge opened in 1750. Rows of shops lined the bridge’s roadway, and houses were built on top of the shops.

In 1831, a new London Bridge was built and the original was torn down. The second bridge lasted until 1968, when it, too, was dismantled. The current London Bridge, built between 1968 and 1972, is the one that stands today.
