CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“Ithought he’d never stop quacking,” Juniper said once the police had left.

“He came to some good conclusions.” Tori crossed her arms over her chest and gave Juniper a look. “And for once, you seemed to work with him instead of antagonizing him. What gives? I know that means you’re up to something.”

Juniper planted an innocent look on her face. “Moi? Never. Okay, well, maybe a little. I feel like I need to crack this case before another Santa ends up dead, and I don’t trust the dynamic ducks to do that. Not to mention I need all this drama behind me so I can finish things up for the party.”

“Juniper Holiday, what are you planning? You know you should leave the detecting to the cops. You could be in danger, and I can’t babysit you. I have a book to finish.”

“Don’t worry. I won’t be in danger.” Juniper walked over to the window. “See the footprints outside? Well, one set is smaller, and what kind of people have small feet?” Juniper pointed to her own feet.

“Small people?” Tori ventured.

“Exactly! And remember Simon, the first Santa? He was height challenged. I figure if there really is a ring of thieves and two Santas have already been killed, it stands to reason the other Santa might be involved.”

“And you’re going to go over and have a chat with him.” Tori raised her brow.

“Of course. Just a friendly chat. Nothing to worry about. Nothing dangerous.”

Tori shook her head. “Well, I know I can’t stop you.”

Finn came trotting over. He looked at the window then up at Juniper. Juniper picked him up. “Don’t worry. I gave you credit for making the discovery.”

Meow! Ludo came running into the room with Loki in hot pursuit. Barclay, Tori’s beloved Jack-Russell-and-Chihuahua mix, bolted in behind them, barking. Her tail was wagging, and her brown eyes sparkled with excitement.

“What in the world?” Tori scooped up the little dog, who forgot all about the cats he’d been chasing and smothered her face in kisses.

“What’s Ludo got?” Tori nodded toward the cat, who was batting something. Whatever it was slid across the floor like a hockey puck and ended up under the couch.

Juniper got down on all fours and reached under the couch. “It’s thin, feels like glass.” She managed to get her fingers on it and slid it out.

“Stop!” Tori’s yell startled Juniper. She turned to look at her god-daughter. Tori put Barclay down and rushed over to Juniper. “That could be evidence.”

Juniper’s gaze jerked back to the item. “Oh.” She squinted then leaned closer. “It looks like the lens from a pair of eyeglasses.”

“It sure does.” Tori pulled a tissue out of the box on the table and picked up the lens. “Perhaps even a pair of spectacles like Santa wears.”

“Was Cecil wearing spectacles?” Juniper glanced over at the tree where the Santa had been lying and tried to remember if he’d been wearing glasses or not.

“Hard to tell with that train mashed into his face, but didn’t all the Santas wear them in their interviews?” Tori asked.
