Chapter 13

Late in the night, when the world was enveloped in darkness, and the morning light was still a couple of hours away, Katie was lying asleep in Cora Halstead’s arms. She slept peacefully, at first, but then she began to dream. A nightmare, of course.

She was dreaming of the red-faced demon. He was standing in front of her, just like always, just standing there staring at her. But this time, he opened his mouth to speak. Katie could see his lips moving, but no sound came out. Finally, he stopped talking, and started to smile. He gestured behind him towards an open doorway, and beckoned Katie nearer to it.

She walked forward with uncertain steps. She moved up to the doorway, and peeked inside the room.

It was Abel Damien’s office. He was lying on the floor, completely skinned, in a pool of his own blood. He looked like something out of Tales from the Crypt.

On the wall behind his body, in dark red blood, were the words Semper tecum. Always with you.

Katie looked frantically at the demon, and he smiled gleefully.

Suddenly, Katie woke to the feeling of warm hands on her bare shoulders. She bolted upright, covered with sweat, shaking from head to toe.

Cora Halstead was beside her on the sofa, her hands still on her shoulders. “Are you all right?” she asked. “Were you having a nightmare?”

“It’s no big deal,” Katie muttered, passing a cold and clammy hand across her face. I have them all the time.”

“Every night?”

“Usually.”

Cora wrapped an arm around Katie’s waist, and pulled her back down to the sofa. She held her tightly for a moment, her soft breasts pressed against Katie’s back, her cheek touching Katie’s shoulder.

It was a marvelous feeling – almost too good. Katie had learned a long time ago, if something seemed too good to be true, it usually was.

She untwined her naked limbs from Cora’s, and fished her clothes off the floor. The lamp was still burning, and Cora’s eyes were watching her hungrily. “I wish you didn’t have to leave,” she whispered. “I wish we were somewhere else.”

“Probably not as much as I do,” Katie replied in an empty voice. “Don’t forget – I’m the one who has to go back out there.”

Cora’s eyes began to shine, and she pulled Katie towards her again. “I wish there was something I could do,” she murmured, tucking a lock of Katie’s hair behind her ear.

“You and me both,” Katie said with a smile. But then she forgot her bitterness, and leaned down to kiss Cora. She felt her lips, her tongue. She could feel her breath passing into her mouth. Her heart, her soul felt like it was on fire. She was having trouble breathing. It was almost supernatural.

Suddenly, Cora pulled her lips away, and stared into Katie’s face. “If I had a choice,” she said, “I’d give all this up. Maybe we’d run away together.”

She paused, bit her lip, and then smiled unhappily. “But no one really has a choice,” she added.
