DAD COULDNâT GET ENOUGH of Leeanne and as far as I could tell, Leeanne couldnât get enough of me, though she pretended otherwise, keeping her guard up around me, saying very little when it was just the two of us in the living room if Dad had ducked into the bathroom or hopped on a phone call or slipped out into the garage for some tool.
At Bethel Woods, she acted shy and reserved during our private meetings. She seemed committed to saying only what was necessary, offering her thoughts and feedback about my story.
I had finally worked up the nerve to dive into writing the idea I had outlined, which Leeanne had encouraged me to turn into a novella.
The story of my vanished mother.
As April wore on, I settled into a new rhythm of life, one which happily centered on Leeanne but was constantly plagued by my fatherâs incessant presence. Valerie hadnât been much better, but at least she had come to terms with my airtight practice schedule and had stopped complaining to me about it.
I soldiered through school, squeezing in laps and training during my lunch period on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to accommodate my creative writing class at Bethel Woods.
On those days, I drove straight from Sixth period over to Leeanneâs office to meet with her privately, always resting my forearms on her desk and giving her my full, undivided attention.

I felt like I could see past her guarded veneer and detect the intrigue in me she was probably fighting.
I had never met a challenge like trying to weave my way into her heart, but I could tell that I had. It was hidden in the quirks of her mouth and those lingering glances she tried not to give me whenever we were seated around the conference table during her workshop.
I found ways to brush my thigh against hers or touch her in some way as I headed out to join the team at Liberty High for practice. Gave her a little something extra to maintain the ground I had won with her, the energy between us having connected and bonded and fused us together in a way that I could feel.
Whenever I got home from practice, Leeanne was often at the house, cooking dinner with Dad or sipping wine in the backyard as he barbequed under the floodlights.
She revealed herselfâgave her true feelings awayâevery time she tried to put a wall up between us. She wasnât fooling anyone except for Dad, of course.
She avoided engaging me in conversation and would grow tense if Dad left us for a minute, but I took it all as evidence of her attraction to me. She was trying too hard to fight what was happening between us deep beneath the surface.
I liked testing her. I got into the habit, after returning home from practice,
