Glyn Daniel

Glyn Daniel (1914–86) was a Welsh archaeologist, scientist, and academic. Born in Lampeter Velfrey, he went up to St. John’s College, Cambridge in 1932 and after graduating with a First, he remained at the college for the rest of his career. Among those he taught was Jessica Mann, who later became a successful crime writer and critic; she contributed an article about crime fiction by or concerning dons to a book of essays compiled in Daniel’s honour. He wrote two detective novels. The Cambridge Murders was published in 1945 under the pen-name Dilwyn Rees. In 1954, Welcome Death appeared under his own name. Both books feature the archaeologist Sir Richard Cherrington, a character inspired by Sir Mortimer Wheeler, who—like Daniel—became a well-known TV personality, noted for popularizing archaeology in the 1950s. Unfortunately, Daniel felt dissatisfied with Welcome Death and moved away from the genre.

Or so I thought until I discovered this enjoyable story. I was pleasantly surprised, when researching potential material for the British Library Crime Classics anthology Crimes of Cymru, to find “Death at Christmas” tucked away in the anthology Welsh Short Stories, edited by George Ewart Evans and published in 1959. There is no record of the story in the usual sources of information about short mysteries; my guess is that Evans encouraged Daniel to contribute to his collection, and this story was the result.
