chapter four
Why Does Racism Matter?
A
lthough racists are difficult to identify because of self-denial, racism is demonstrated in their actions, most visibly physical violence directed at innocent people because of the color of their skin. Racist acts are chronicled in stories told by victims and reported by media, in objective data collected by research and government and private organizations, and in controlled studies mostly in universities. The consequences of racism can be observed in everyday life, law enforcement, health care, employment, politics, and schools. Racism affects not only the physical and emotional well-being of victims but also their self-concepts and performance in tasks related to negative stereotypes.
