Ford was wide awake. It wasn’t very often that he actually slept with another person in the bed. He wasn’t proud of the fact that he tended to disappear before morning, even if his partners knew it was a no-strings affair. But Reef’s warm body wasn’t the problem. No, Ford was the one wrapped around Reef, not the other way around. His skin was smooth under Ford’s palm, Reef sighed as Ford trailed a line of kisses along his shoulder up his throat. Burying his nose in Reef’s hair, he inhaled, smelling something spicy rather than fruity. That’s when things got weird for Ford. What was he doing lying in bed with a man? A very naked man. A downright sexy sonofabitch too. Their time together, the night before, had been a crazy explosion of chemistry. Ford hadn’t intended to get naked with him and get off, but neither of them could stop. It wasn’t that he had regrets, but… well, maybe he did. Not about Reef, never him.

He crawled out of bed, tucking the covers tight around Reef so he wouldn’t stir. Everything could be fixed with a cup of tea — or maybe a scotch — and he needed to think. What if Reef’s family gave him an ultimatum? Or worse, told him they never wanted to see him again? Coach and Momma Bear meant the world to Reef. Could Ford handle being the cause if Reef lost them? What about his own family? Ford had a great circle of friends who he was sure would be there for him no matter what, but he ached to have a better relationship with his parents, despite what he’d told Reef. Could he risk losing them all over again? Pulling on the same jeans he wore the night before, he hopped over to his crutches and hobbled out of the room, shutting the door behind him quietly.

As the tea was steeping, Ford randomly jiggling the bag, staring at the color change, lost in thought, when a bird chirped outside the window. He looked up, the morning sunshine beckoning to him. Moving over to the large windows on one crutch, he drew the drapes across the window, letting the light inside. Taking his mug to sit in the sun was messy, but not too bad; by the time he slumped down onto the chair he still had three-quarters of it left. Ford closed his eyes, letting his head fall back and the winter sun warmed him. His mind ran rampant, every possible scenario flashing through it, his thoughts turning decidedly depressing. How could they possibly make something between them work? Did he even want that? But how could he walk away from Reef? There was no way he could say goodbye. Maybe friends with benefits? No, that didn’t sound right, either. It had hurt Ford when he’d suggested keeping it casual. He was way more invested in this than he’d realized. There was no hope of protecting his heart when, whatever they had, turned to shit.
