FROM CHARLOTTESVILLE TO NORTH KOREA, WHITE SUPREMACY FEEDS ENDLESS WAR

On the weekend when Oscar López Rivera made his triumphant and controversial first trip out of Puerto Rico to my hometown of New York City, the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR, the oldest ongoing peace group in the U.S.) held its National Council meeting in nearby Nyack. As an interfaith organization with deep roots in the “civil rights” movement and countless spiritually based human rights efforts, FOR was deeply supportive of the campaign for Oscar’s freedom—but somehow managed anyway to elect me in absentia to serve as their national cochair. Following the violence and raw hatred sparked by the events in Charlottesville and subsequent cities, FOR issued the following statement—penned by me and a handful of others—to make plain the connections between peace, justice, and the waves of racist violence we continue to face.
