The day looked perfect. Maybe not many people would be excited about heavy snow blanketing the quaint, boxy buildings of Copenhagen, but Ray couldn’t keep still and bounced his boots up and down on the crunchy surface. Snow drifts banked the streets, and the roads hadn’t been cleared properly yet. Obviously, the Belgians weren’t used to such heavy snowfall. The Christmas lights were painted with white flecks, and everyone walked around in a daze.

Rachelle held his gloved hand and laughed.

“It’s amazing,” he said.

“Where do we go? We haven’t even planned our day.”

“That’s just perfect. I love being spontaneous for a change. My life at home is always so planned and purposeful. I had my whole future with Desia mapped out for the next decade. But let’s not talk of her now.”

Rachelle shrugged. “If you need to talk about her…”

Ray shook his head and stared at the dark clouds dimming the setting. Even they couldn’t take away the breathless beauty of a city that reminded him of a magical toy story. The buildings looked like doll houses squashed together, colourful and crammed full of windows.

“We must look like tourists just standing in the middle of the street gaping.” She swung his arm back and forth, energy pulsing into him from her contact. He picked up her excitement and knew it matched his.

“You know the place. Take me somewhere.”

She blinked. “I didn’t think of anything. I was so excited just to spend a whole day doing nothing with you…”

“Then we will do nothing. We’ll walk through the streets and look around without being tied down to anything in particular.”

Her eyes shone bright, and she nodded, pressing her lips together. He wanted to kiss her right away, but if he did that then, they wouldn’t see any of the city. What would he say to his family if he had no photos of the snow?

“I want to buy you a Christmas present, though,” he said. “I’ll find you the perfect present.”

“I don’t need anything.” She shrugged again, head down.

“Why not?”

“I have everything I need.”

“I want to spoil you.” Her face paled and stilled, frozen in an awkward frown. What had he said? Was he being too forward? Why didn’t she want him to spoil her?

“As a friend.”

She snapped out of it and smiled. “As long as I can get you something too.”

“If you insist.” He winked and wiped his roughened glove across her chilled cheek. Even that contact sent heat up his arm. She was achingly beautiful with her rosy cheeks and cold nose, her hair loose in natural, dark curls and her fluffy beanie framing her face. There was something so genuine and natural about her. She didn’t demand anything from him and seemed quite content just to spend the day doing nothing. How free he felt with her, how satisfied and at peace. Nothing could spoil this moment. Nothing at all.

Only when a cold pair of lips brushed his cheek did he realise he’d closed his eyes.

“Thanks, Ray.” Her voice breathed at his ear, and then she pulled away.
