CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

River hurried up the hill toward the Blackwell House, the object she was carrying heavy in her pocket. Her stomach twisted the closer she was to seeing Dorian. She still couldn’t believe she had been so wrong about him, though that shouldn’t be such a surprise. She had dated Zach for three years without even realizing how much of a jerk he could be to her. There was always a good excuse for his behavior, a little voice in the back of her head telling her she was at fault. She had always been naïve like that.

And now she had fallen for someone who probably was far worse than a harmless jerk. After what Shelly told her the night before played on repeat in her mind, River had come to accept it. There just wasn’t a good explanation for what Shelly had seen. Dorian had done something, and even if it was hard to imagine, Thomas’s scared expression didn’t lie that night when River visited him.

She rounded the house and squared her shoulders, her teeth clenched so hard they ached. Shelly was right, leaving this place was better, but River had a visceral need to find out exactly what had happened to Thomas.

Standing behind the French doors, she knocked on the glass. Dorian stood on the other side. He looked taller and more intimidating than the day before, River’s new perception of him having been altered. The French doors opened.

“Good morning, River.”

“Morning.” Her dry tone made her wince. Dorian might be blind, but if there was one thing he was good at, it was listening. The change in her tone wasn’t lost on him. River could tell by the way his smile faded away and how his eyebrows knitted together ever so slightly.

“Please, come in,” he said, moving out of the way.

Despite itching to get on with what she wanted to do, River knew the drill: look for mirrors and paintings. Dorian wouldn’t talk to her unless she did that first. She shed her coat and started rummaging through the room. Dorian stood there a little awkwardly for a moment, seemingly feeling the drop in her mood, then decided to leave her be and sat down at his usual spot on the sofa.

River went through the same routine. The wardrobe, the bed, the nightstand, then the bathroom, and back to where Dorian was sitting. As usual, there were no mirrors anywhere.

Until she opened the last drawer of the dresser and something rattled inside. River leaned to the side, looking at the back of the drawer. A small, square mirror lay inside. It hadn’t been there the day before.

She grabbed it and turned to Dorian. “There’s a mirror.”

He snapped his head in her direction. “Throw it away.”

“In… the trash can?”

“Outside. Make sure to break it first.”

The small object in her hand made her shudder, as though bad vibes came from it. It was only her imagination, but she couldn’t wait to get rid of it. Dorian’s fear of it creeped her out.
