âI tried calling you repeatedly.â Regulusâs voice was low and angry. âYou could have called me.â
Several feet separated us. I couldnât look into his eyes. âYou sound like my dad.â
âI thought something happened. Iâve been worried. And angry. I should have been there. Maybe you didnât want me to know what was happening.â Now he seemed uncertain.
âI told you there was nothing you could do. We had it under control.â
âSo under control that you were in jail.â
âI wasnât in jail. I was at the jail.â
âAnd Austin?â
âWellâ¦â I shuffled my feet. âHe was in jail. But it was a misunderstanding.â
I finally forced myself to look up and realized that Regulus wasnât even looking at me. He had pivoted toward the woods, away from me. His back was straight and his hands clenched into tight balls.
âNot again.â
âWhat? Not again?â I asked.
âNo missions, investigating, leaving my sight. You are no good to the IIA if youâre dead.â
âI canât believe you said that. Is this the real deal? Youâre looking out for the IIA?â
He turned toward me, came closer. âI canât stand it. This feeling I have makes me say the wrong things. Think the wrong things. I completely understand the need for the rules of interaction.â He drew me into his arms and buried his face in my neck.
I breathed out in relief. I didnât want to fight. I always waited for the touching, the feeling I craved when I looked at him or talked to him.
âI do not know what to do with you,â he murmured against my hair. âI donât know what to do with my feelings. So, I turn to what I know. I know how to be a team leader. And I fail in every other aspect.â
âNo. I know you were worried sick. Your instincts were correct. Bleeker is in Goliath.â
âI suspected it.â Regulus lifted his head to look at me. He kept his arms loosely around me. âHe didnât hide very well.â
âI know why heâs there. Thereâs a portal. Iâm sure of it. I felt the draw of it. You didnât tell me there could be another one so close to us. I wasnât expecting that.â
âIt is surprising.â
My dadâs face appeared in the window, and he rapped on the glass from inside the house. Regulus dropped his hands.
âFive more minutes,â Dad mouthed and held up his hand, fingers splayed. âFive.â
âMy dad isnât happy. He had to get Austin out.â I waited for Regulus to ask me about that. When he didnât, I continued, âThey said I was free to go, but Austin couldnât. His mom wouldnât answer the phone, so I called my dad.â
Regulus appeared irritated. âThis is probably his doing. He wanted to spend more time with you, so he landed you both in the jail.â Then he laughed. âI know thatâs not true. Iâm sorry that I said it.â
âNo, itâs nobodyâs fault.â
He again slid his arms around my waist. He bent to kiss me, but I angled my head slightly to one side, glancing to my left where the imposing figure of my dad stood, pulling back the curtain.
