CHAPTER NINE

As the trio made their way up her drive way, Taryn noticed several vehicles parked out front. “Looks like you’re having a party,” Jonesy observed.

“That’s odd...no one told me about it.” She recognized all but one of the trucks. “Do you know who that red truck belongs to?”

“Yeah, that’s Teigan Falcon’s truck.”

“Keiryn’s dad?”

“Yep, and the other one is Maxym Taylor’s. I don’t envy you having to walk into that battle field. If Keiryn and Larkin are both there, I’m shocked the place it still standing.”

Ilya emerged from the front door and walked to the car. “Hello,” she greeted them with a smile that quickly faded. “What’s that smell?”

“There was an incident next to the garden and we had just fertilized it for next year,” Jayma offered.

“An incident?”

“It was nothing, Dear.”

“We did discover that Taryn should probably go out for the football team next year. She could definitely play a tackle position,” Jonesy teased.

“Well thanks for having her over,” Ilya smiled.

“It was our pleasure. I do hope we can do it again sometime,” Jayma grinned as she began to back the car up.

Mother and daughter waved as they drove out of sight. “So what happened?” Ilya asked.

“It’s not that big of a deal. I thought Jonesy was on fire and I tackled him. We fell into their freshly fertilized garden.”

“You thought he was on fire?”

“Yes, Mother,” she growled in irritation, knowing that she was only playing twenty questions because her mother thought that she had something to do with Jonesy being on fire. “Look, Aunt Jayma said it was probably the sun reflecting off of all of her glass globes, sun catchers and other yard ornaments...it’s not a big deal. So it’s your turn. You want to tell me what the Taylor’s, Gastyn and the Falcons are doing here?”

“Aunt Jayma?”

“Yes, Aunt Jayma. Now don’t try to change the subject...what’s going on here?”

“Don’t be upset, Taryn. We needed to speak with the boys before talking with you.”

“You know how much I hate surprises. So whatever you’ve been plotting and planning without me...count me out.”

“We can’t leave you out, Taryn. This isn’t just about you anymore. We’ve moved into this community and we have to do whatever necessary, to not only protect you, but to protect everyone else who lives here.”

“Whatever...” she mumbled.

“I know this isn’t ideal, but I think that you will be pleased with the solution we’ve come up with.”

“Before you drop the bomb on me, can I please take a shower?”

“Oh, Baby Girl...I must insist that you do.”

Leaving her sack of stinky clothes next to the front door, she inhaled deeply, making sure her emotions were in check before stepping inside. As she walked in, she took in everyone’s face. Gastyn appeared calm on the surface, but she could sense his apprehension. Maxym smiled warmly at her, but did nothing to hide the worry in his eyes. Keiryn sat on the couch looking at her strangely, in a way she couldn’t get a read on. She could only assume the man standing next to the couch was his father.
