Chapter 15:

Keira, Keira, Keira

Keira beat incessantly on Colby’s window. William had mentioned Colby when talking about a possible sacrifice. She had to do everything in her power to protect him.

She knocked again. He lazily got up from the bed, opened the window, and plopped stomach-first back onto the bed. He still had on his date night clothes−a nice polo shirt and blue jeans−but they looked rumpled as if he had been sleeping in them. Keira rushed past him to his closet. She pulled out a suitcase and started opening his dresser drawers.

“Colby, you have to leave. It’s not safe for you here anymore. Dad can find a place…”

“I’m not going anywhere,” he mumbled into the pillow.

She moved to the bed. “Don’t be brave. I need you to be safe now. The mogdocs are coming for you.”

“Why?” he asked. “Oh, let me guess. It’s because of you. It’s always about you.”

He stood up and ran his fingers through his hair. She could see that he was furious.

“I’m sick of it, Keira. You order me around like I’m your sidekick. You jerk away when I get close. You stop talking when I enter a room. Worst of all, I know you’ve been keeping secrets from me. I’m not some gift that you can use and toss away.”

“They’ve already gotten to you,” Keira whispered.

“Believe it or not, I can take care of myself.”

She reached for him, but he wouldn’t have it.

“Get off me,” he yelled. “I don’t want you here. I’m not going with you and you can’t make me. I don’t care how freakishly strong you are, you can’t muscle me into being your boyfriend, not anymore.”

“I haven’t. If that’s what you want.”

“Oh Keira, don’t you know. It’s not you, it’s me. Wait, that’s a lie, it’s you…definitely you.”

“Why are you being so mean?”

“I’m tired of being walked on. You’re just using me and if this is the only way to make it stop, so be it.”

Keira’s eyes started to tear up, but Colby wouldn’t stop.

“Poor Keira, I know it’s hard when you realize that it’s not all about you.”

Hurt and heartbroken, she moved to the window.

“That’s it,” he said. “Run away, little mouse. Good riddance.” He followed her, practically pushed her out, and slammed the window shut. She heard the lock snap into place for the first time.

Keira eased down the rose trellis, jumping off a couple of feet from the ground. She jogged around the side of the house and hopped up onto the front porch to sit down on a rocking chair stationed near the front door. She wouldn’t cry.

As the minutes passed, she started to think through what William had said about the scroll and the prophecy. She realized that she had overreacted and what he had really been saying was that he thought the gift wasn’t a sacrifice. Convincing herself that Colby was brainwashed, but safe, at least for the night, she started the long walk home alone.
