Chapter Ten

Wednesday, April 26th.

Ross Harley-Davidson. East Austin.

“What are these toothbrushes for?” asked Adam. He picked up the plastic bag on the kitchen table and frowned.

“Me and Tommy stole them last night. We went to the place where that guy, Lukas Weaver lives and we didn’t know which one was his.”

Adam smiled. “He lives with other guys?”

“They were at the clubhouse and nobody was at the rancher when we got there.”

“You also need something from the other twin,” said Adam, “to compare and make the match. Does Annie have things left from her husband?”

“Shit,” said Farrell. “I can’t ask her that. I’ll have to get Declan to help me find something on the sly that we can use. Dec will know if Annie is keeping stuff of Lincoln’s in a box or a drawer.”

“Do you think she would still have something of his?”

“Hell yeah, she would. She probably kept everything of Linc’s. Her and Linc were like…” Farrell shook his head. “Can’t talk about it. He was my cousin, and I loved that guy like my own brother.”

“How did he die so young?” asked Adam.

“Drugs.”

“Yeah, drugs,” said Adam.

“Linc was a junkie. Got cleaned up and came to Austin to be a cop because I was a cop. He made a great cop too. Jeeze, he was good.”

Farrell had to stop to clear his throat. “He couldn’t stay clean. Annie watched him close and supported his effort. Linc tried. He tried so fuckin hard.”

A sob escaped from Farrell’s chest and he disappeared into the bathroom. He stripped down and stood under the shower and tried to pull himself together.

“I’ve got to get to work.”

Ten minutes later, Farrell was dressed and ready to roll. He said to Adam, “Take the toothbrushes to Blacky. He’s working on the birth records.”

“Sure. I’ll drop them off or I can take them to a testing lab too, if Blaine wants me to.”

“Yeah, do that,” said Farrell. “We need the results fast. Blacky will tell you where he wants the testing done. He’s got his favorite places.”

“Happy to help,” said Adam. “I’m finding this search fascinating.”

Violent Crime Squad HQ. Airport Road. Austin.

“Good morning, people,” said Farrell. He was a bit late and the crew were sitting at their stations drinking coffee when he arrived.

He had taken an extra minute and stopped into the Harley store to see if Carter was there but she wasn’t. She’d cancelled their dinner date and Farrell had about given up on her. Too much going on right now with Tommy to be bothered tracking down a girl who wasn’t that exciting to begin with. A pretty face and a decent body wasn’t cutting it for him anymore. Dime a dozen and when he did get a date with one of them, he lost interest almost immediately.

He took a breath and tried to concentrate on the day ahead. “Okay, people, time to change clubs and this is going to be brutal. The Brotherhood is loosely centered in and around Rollingwood and they are active in that area, but they push into other areas as well and they are hard to stop.
