Steveâs truck led the way down the muddy path; Dak and Kimly followed in the Jeep. Steve and Nisa had spent years forming relationships with the people in rural tribes, and the morning after the storm Steve and Nisa decided visit a church in a Tai Lue village along the banks of the Mekong River. It was a shanty town in one of the provinces of Chiang Rai. The village was north of where they were, and it was along the same route that Dak and Kimly would travel to reach Mai Sai.
For the first time in days, Kimly seemed more like her old self. The swelling around her eye had gone down significantly, and it was taking on a yellow hue. When Dak asked her if she wanted to visit the church with them, she was open to the experience.
âHey, did you get it?â Kimly whispered.
âIt?â he repeated, feigning ignorance.
âThe gun?â she whispered again.
âYes, I got IT. But, hopefully we wonât need it.â
âIâm sorry,â the sullenness in Kimlyâs voice was unexpected.
âSorry?â Dak asked as he navigated around a deep hole in the road. The storm clouds had rolled on, leaving a trail of mud where dirt had once lain.
âI know how frustrating it is to do something you donât want to, just because you want to please someone else.â
âThatâs just part of life. We all do it. Iâm sure youâve done your share of sacrificing for someone else.â
âHmmh,â Kimly let out an instinctive muffled laugh. âYou just described my marriage.â
âKimly, every marriage has hard times.â
âYeah, Iâm sure they do. Butâ¦I donât know, Kyle and Iâ¦weâre justâ¦I donât knowâ¦Whoa!â Kimly exclaimed as the Jeep bounced over a rock on the road.
They drove along in silence for a few moments, until Dak was pretty sure Kimly wasnât going to pick up where she had left off.
âIâve known a lot of people, and Iâve seen people in some pretty hard situations. Iâm fairly certain that whatever is happening in your marriage can be overcome.â Dak fell easily into the Pastoral role he was accustomed to.
âNo, I disagree with you,â her voice was calm and matter of fact, âsometimes two people were not supposed to get married in the first place. Thatâs not a hard time. Thatâs a bad marriage. You canât overcome something that should have never happened.â
âWhy is it only the people who are struggling in their marriage who say that the marriage âshouldnât have happenedâ? It has never made any sense to me. Have you ever considered that some of the best marriages may be the ones that âshouldnât have happenedâ?â
âOh please, that makes no senseââ Kimly responded to him, but Dak cut her off and continued.
âPerhaps itâs the ones who donât belong together that fight and claw, and find themselves more alive than those who have it easy. Isnât that what matters most? To live authentically is to live life well. Itâs not about being happy as much as we make it about being happy,â as the last few words left him he realized he sounded pretty passionate, surprising himself with his intensity.
