I awoke from a sound in the hall. A door closed. A cough. I scrambled from the couch where Iâd fallen asleep, reading about Cooking with Fruit by Harriet Schuyler Nelson.
Tony stuck his head in the door, his hair shiny from melting snow. âYou still up?â
I took a wobbly step toward him. âI cooked dinner.â I could tell he was exhausted. Shadows beneath his eyes made him look gaunt. âI didnât know when youâd get here.â
I expected him to turn me down, but he patted my arm before pouring himself a whiskey. âI better see what it is,â he said before sinking into a chair.
âItâll be a bit. Need to warm things up first.â And from the doorway, âjust stay there. Iâll bring it to you.â
By the time I returned with two plates, he was sleeping. I removed the half-empty glass from his fingers and got a blanketâall that work wasted.
But when I covered him, he opened his eyes.
âDone already?â He sniffed. âSmells delicious.â
I placed one plate on his lap, the other on the arm of the chair. Iâd only half-cooked the pasta and finished it now. There hadnât been fresh tomatoes, but Iâd discovered a can, pureed it, added onion, thinly sliced garlic, basil, and a few other spices, Iâd found.
Tony ate with gusto. âThis is delicious,â he said twice, half to himself. By the time he was done he took a deep breath. âWell done.â
Wordlessly, I handed him the other plate. On it laid pale egg-shaped cookies. âAmaretti legieriâ¦almond cakes.â
Tony selected one, then another. Between bites he continued to mumble. âSo good.â
At last I smiled. âIt was fun. I could use more ingredients though.â
A shadow ran across Tonyâs features. âNot sure how to tell you this. I had to close the club tonight. My supply line got compromised. Trucks broke down; there were raids. Iâm sorry.â
I collected Tonyâs dishes. âI donât understand. What does it mean?â
âUnless I find a new supplier tomorrow and a way to bribe the police,â Tony said, âIâm ruined.â
To my surprise, I found myself back at his side. I placed a palm on his head, trying to imagine what it felt like to have so much to lose.
Tony leaned back in his chair and took my hand. By now I understood what reflected in his eyes. It was the same with all men Iâd met. Lust.
He caressed the inside of my forearm and pulled me on his lap. This time I knew what to do. I pulled off my drawers and straddled him. His hand now on my legs, he pushed up my dress. Each movement was unhurried, yet purposeful. And for the first time, I found interest in the act. I unbuttoned his pants and fitted myself to him.
His lips found mine and together we rocked back and forth. Slowly. Tonyâs hands pulled down the sleeve of my dress and began to lick my breast the way heâd done the first time.
Inside me, things began to change. The nerves along my spine tingled, spread to the front, up and down my belly.
