Now aged 25 and in his final year in the university, with the ladies and the hustle Eby barely had time for his studies until one day the departmental Exams Officer for Computer Science, who himself had been one of Eby’s patrons of pirated software called him. He called him to discuss what at first he thought was an anomaly in Eby’s exam results.

The departmental exam results were due to be published out on the notice board and the man didn’t want Eby being so popular to receive the shock on the notice board, so he thought to show Eby the facts in private beforehand. The man didn’t want Eby thinking the problem was an orchestrated witch-hunt against him so the exams officer let Eby in on the results. A big red “F” was printed next to Eby’s favorite course of “Artificial Intelligence”, this automatically meant Eby would have to repeat that final year until he passed the failed course and would not be graduating with his original classmates. This was a shocker for Eby, who all along had been nursing an ambition of landing a good job upon graduation.

With this news, Eby decided to get serious, he dropped all the girlfriends except one, whom he sees only briefly about once in a week or so. At that time, a new vice chancellor took over things in the university and began making reforms in earnest, one of which was a technology program geared at providing all the students in the university with a laptop computer each. This news was palatable to Eby seeing he was well connected.

Eby began making moves to secure a contract with the laptop supplier so that he could install an anti-malware in each one for a fee. The university’s Chief Technical Officer who in times past had patronized Eby’s business was willing to pitch Eby’s proposal to the Laptop Committee for a cut of the pie to which Eby had agreed. This deal, if successful would net Eby at least three million in profits; an amount he had never dreamed was possible for him to hold.

Now it happened that Just as Eby was about to close this deal, the laptop initiative became entangled in administrative bureaucracy which necessitated the supply of the machines to be stalled and shifted forward to two more years ahead. This demolished Eby’s plan as he could not wait that long to clinch the deal, he was to graduate the following year and was to be sent on a one-year, mandatory Youth Service programme elsewhere in the country—a programme which the federal government had setup for all graduates of its accredited universities in the country to participate in as a precondition for employment.

Favor didn’t seem to be on Eby’s side as he finished all his final year exams at the university, got cleared and graduated, narrowly missing the chance to be an illegal multimillionaire.
