“ ‘The jury is insisting on Cliburn, but…’ began Michael Andreevich [Suslov].

“ ‘Kaftanov is right, if we try to pressure the jury there will be a catastrophe, the foreign members will just turn around and leave Moscow,’ Furtseva interrupted him.

“ ‘But he’s an American!’ Suslov was not giving up.

“ ‘But his style of playing is ours, Russian; Cliburn studied in the U.S. under Professor Lhévinne and she, in turn, came from the Safonov school,’ Furtseva intervened again. She had come well prepared to the discussion.

“Suslov tried to continue, but my father had already made a decision.

“ ‘As the jury is insisting on it, we do not need to interfere. They are professionals. And having an American win is even good, we will show the world our impartiality,’ my father concluded and smiled.

“Suslov was dejectedly silent.

“ ‘Is that all you have?’ my father said dryly. The visitors nodded.”
